As the day draws near for our baby to graduate from High School, I reflect on all the years we have had children in the Public Education system. With 7 children spanning 13 years, the number is quite high. Our first child started school in 1981. Now, 27 years later, our youngest is graduating. For over a quarter of a century we have been fighting with our kids to get them out of bed and get ready and off to school. We have spent countless nights urging them to do their homework and listening to their complaints. We have wracked our brains trying to help them on homework subjects that we completely forgot years before they were even born. Now to my question. Has it all been worth it? I would have to answer that with a resounding YES!! I have seven children (and four inlaws that I claim as mine) who are active and successful participants in our society, in a large part due to their education. I have 10 grandchildren who are all cute and smart and will probably grow up and outshine all of us in intelligence. I have worked in our public education system for the last 21 years. I would never say that our system doesn't have problems. But even with all these problems, it is still the best system for our children and for our society. We are taught that "The Glory of God is Intelligence." If this is true then any amount of time or effort we put into out childrens education, whether it be booting them out of bed in the morning or reading them to sleep at night, is well worth it. It is helping them attain the first step on their road to eternal glory. Ken Ralphs
