How Does A Website Generate Money?

June 27, 2008

Welcome to the first edition of our "My LDS Lifestyle"
newsletter. We hope you enjoy the content of our
newsletters and will send us your comments, suggestions,
ideas for topics, or even your own articles that you would
like us to print.

We hope to send a newsletter out each month, but we promise
we won't send one out unless we have something of interest
to put in it. We won't put out a newsletter just for the
sake of putting one out.

We hope you enjoy our newsletters and will tell your family
and friends about our site and encourage them to sign up to
receive them. If you no longer wish to receive our
newsletter, please let us know and we will take you off our
list.

Now to the subject for this month. As many of you know,
Camile and I started this computer business a few months
ago with the hopes that it would help us earn a little
extra money to support our two missionaries (Michael is
doing great in Massachusetts and Eric is getting ready to
turn his mission papers this summer). I have had a few
people ask me how our website generates money. Let me
explain how this works.

There are basically two ways that our website generates an
income for us. The first way is through direct sales from
our own store. ORCHIDS AND LACE is a business that we have
operated for many years. We do mainly floral arrangements
and specialize in weddings. We also have a supply of
backdrops and other items to rent out for weddings. We
have incorporated this business onto our website so people
can view our portfolio and order their flowers on line. We
hope to be adding some additional items to this store soon.

The second way we generate income is through our
affiliates. When we first set up this website, we checked
out many large stores and companies that have sites on the
Internet. If we felt they carried products or services
that fit the intent of our page, through content, price and
quality, we contacted them for permission to run their
“Banner” or advertisement on our site.

These “Banners” are direct links from our website to their
store and contain a code number that, in effect, tells the
business that a customer was “referred” to them from our
site. In return for the referral, we get a small
commission on anything that customer might purchase in
their store while they are there.

This is a simplification of the process. I know that I
will never understand the internal workings of this
process. I do know that, in order for us to make any money
on this site we need to get people visiting it. More and
more people are buying on line and I'm sure the number will
continue to increase. It is much safer to buy on line now
than it used to be. As the demand for online sales has
grown, the demand for online security has grown as well.

Our request is simple. Check out our site. Look at the
items we have in our store and check out the advertisers we
have available. If you are going to buy on line anyway,
consider purchasing from our site. We have tried to find
companies in a variety of areas and companies that offer a
good product for a good price.

One other thing, if you don't find what you want on our
site, we have a link to “Google” on each of our pages.
If you go to any site through our “Google” link, we get a
very small commission on any purchase you might make from
any company, regardless of whether they advertise with us
or not.

We hope this helps you understand our business a little
better. We don't mean for this to be forceful or offensive
in any way. Your feedback is important to us. Please let
us know what we can do to improve our site.

Although we have tried hard to keep the content of our site in line with our LDS beliefs, our site is not an official site of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  If you find anything on our site that you feel is not in accordance with these beliefs, please let us know and we will do our best to correct it.
